Writing about FairVet
Everything here is free to use and quote. The figures are read from the live database and refresh daily, so a number on this page is a number that is true today.
About FairVet
FairVet is a free tool that tells pet owners whether a veterinary bill is fair. Owners upload an estimate or a final bill, and it is compared line by line against what other people actually paid nearby — real, de-identified, verified bills, not industry averages or list prices. Clinics can publish their pricing and earn a Fair Price Score computed from those same verified bills. That score cannot be bought, and no payment, subscription or advertising changes a clinic's position in the directory or its certification: every ranking comes from bills and reviews, never from spend.
Copy as-is, or trim. If you shorten it, the sentence worth keeping is the one about verified bills rather than averages — it is the whole difference.

Methodology, in short
A Fair Price Score compares a clinic's verified prices against the typical range for the same procedures in its own region, so a clinic is measured against its neighbours rather than a national figure. A score is only published once a clinic has at least 5 verified bills behind it, and a regional median is only published once it clears its own minimum sample — below that, the page says there isn't enough data yet instead of showing a number that would move on the next bill. Scores and certification are computed from bills alone: they cannot be bought, and paying for anything on FairVet never changes them.
The full method, including how bills are verified and how outliers are handled, is on the methodology page.

For data questions, say what you're trying to measure — a custom cut of the verified bill data can usually be produced, and it is more useful than a quote.
